#1. Best Print Coverage of a Spot News Event by An Individual

First Place:
A Chase, A Crash
Susan Lampert Smith
Wisconsin State Journal
Judges Comments: Reporter got to the source and gently reported the story out of her. Nice dramatic lede. Smith could have relied on the official police version, but she got the surviving witness instead. Nice job on the driver’s family too. Good writing is built on good reporting, this story’s got both. The homeowner witness is great too. This is real Edna buchannan police reporting.

Honorable Mention:
Ladysmith Tornado
Lisa Schuetz
Wisconsin State Journal
Judges Comments: Wisconsin certainly experienced disasters this past year. This entry gives us the whole story – the official loss stats, the human side of the devastation and the follow on the clean-up. Good find on the organization from Minnesota.

#2. Best Print Coverage of a Spot News Event by a Group

First Place:
Defendant Shot Dead in Courtroom Melee
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Staff Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Judges Comments: Very well organized in terms of story angles. The lead story is an exceptionally clear narrative – no -nonsense hard news without the flowery stroy-telling lede. Good scramble considering the fact the Sentinel didn’t have a reporter on the scene while the shootings unfolded.

#15. Investigative

First Place:
Capitol Corruption Investigation
Wisconsin State Journal City Desk
Wisconsin State Journal
Judges Comments:Its hard to argue that this entry doesn’t deserve to win. The rumblings set off by the Wisconsin State Journal’s initial expose in 2001 were nothing compared to the earthquake of 2002, when Madison’s corrupt caucus system crumbled. It’s because of the Wisconsin State journal that newspapers across the state published photos of prominent politicians next to their felony charges. Although this entry depended heavily on work done before the 2002 contest time frame, and most of it consisted of follow-up stories that cannot honestly be defined at “investigative”, the impact cannot be ignored. This was Wisconsin’s watergate.

Honorable Mention:
Unequal Justice
Mary Zahn, Jessica McBride
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Judges Comments: Is $250 a month too much to qualify for a public defender in Wisconsin? That’s what these two reporters found, exposing a hidden and unconstitutional cost of poverty. its hard to forget the people Zahn and McBride found: a man forced to represent himself, even though he didn’t know what “sustained” meant. Another man still wrongly believes the prosecutor was on his side. Another was ordered to pay for his own attorney – with is $9/hour paycheck. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel should be proud for standing up for the unpopular and unconnected. This is what journalism should be.

#16. Personal Service Feature

First Place:
Shouting For Your Supper
Jan Uebelherr, Dennis Getto
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Judges Comments: These two reporters took a fresh topic, examined it like a detective, got out of the office, and gave me a story I would never find in a Google search. Who knew some restaurants get as loud as truck traffic? or that, as we age, it gets harder to suffer through a noisy dinner? The color graphics glowed, the writing was lively all the way to the end, and if left me chuckling. (quietly). They had a lot of fun with this story and so did I.

Honorable Mention:
High School Report Card
Natalie Dorman, Erik Gunn
Milwaukee Magazine, Inc.
