2014 Gridiron Awards Dinner also honors Jonathan Alter, Columnist and NBC

MILWAUKEE, WI—March 28, 2014 The Milwaukee Press Club today announced the preliminary results of its 84th Annual MPC Awards for Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism competition.
Finalists are presented by contest category, and listed alphabetically by organization, either media company or university. Click here for contest results.
Finalists will not know whether they have won a gold, silver or bronze award until the final results are announced, and the winners are honored, at the Club’s May 16th Gridiron Awards Dinner at the InterContinental Hotel in Milwaukee.
This year’s contest garnered more than 500 entries from throughout Wisconsin in professional and collegiate divisions. The competition was judged by 25 professional journalists and press clubs from throughout the U.S., including Florida, Idaho, Michigan and Pennsylvania and in Houston, New Orleans, San Diego, San Francisco and Syracuse.

The Milwaukee Press Club’s Sacred Cat Award, recognizing professional achievements on the national level, will go to nationally award-winning author, reporter, columnist, and television news analyst Jonathan Alter. Alter is the author of three New York Times bestsellers: “The Center Holds: Obama and His Enemies” (2013), “The Promise: President Obama, Year One” (2010) and “The Defining Moment: FDR’s Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope” (2006), also one of the Time’s’ “Notable Books” of the year. Alter spent 28 years at Newsweek, where he was a longtime senior editor and columnist and wrote more than 50 cover stories. He has also written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Washington Monthly, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, The New Republic, Bloomberg View and other publications. Since 1996, Alter has been an analyst and contributing correspondent for NBC News and MSNBC. He is currently an executive producer of “Alpha House,” a political comedy created by Garry Trudeau and starring John Goodman.
Michael Pink is the Milwaukee Ballet Artistic Director and will receive the MPC’s Headliner Award. Pink is the longest serving artistic director in the Milwaukee Ballet’s history. Since joining the Milwaukee Ballet in December of 2002, he has established himself as a prominent member of the Milwaukee arts community, demonstrating his commitment to the future of dance through new work, education and collaboration.
Stephen Roell, the recently retired CEO of Johnson Controls, will also receive the MPC’s Headliner Award. Roell retired at the end of 2013 after serving as CEO of Johnson Controls, which is Wisconsin’s largest public company, since 2007 and chairman since 2008. During this time, the company grew to record levels with revenues of $42.7 billion in fiscal 2013 and approximately 170,000 global employees.
The Headliner Awards are presented annually to those who are making a positive difference in Wisconsin.
