To honor the impact of Milwaukee journalist Don Walker, former colleagues are raising money for an endowed scholarship to benefit students at Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Our goal is to secure enough contributions so that the Don Walker Scholarship will be an annual award of at least $1,000 to a student pursuing journalism.
Walker, an alumnus of both Marquette and UWM, was an influential editor and reporter for The Milwaukee Journal and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for 37 years. He died unexpectedly in May 2015. He was 62.
The Milwaukee Newspaper Guild is sponsoring a kick-off event for the scholarship, including live music, appetizers and raffle items scheduled for:
5:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14
Buck Bradley’s, 1019 N. Old World 3rd St.
Suggested minimum donation: $25*
The Don Walker Scholarship endowment already has benefited from initial leadership gifts from the Milwaukee Brewers, Milwaukee Bucks and The Newspaper Guild, of which Walker was a founding member.
“Don was the consummate professional, someone many of us modeled ourselves after when it came to fairness, work ethic and perseverance,” said Tom Silverstein, president of the Milwaukee Newspaper Guild. “More than that, Don was just a terrific person.”
Walker also was a model of balance, whose devotions included sports, literature, music and, most important, his family. He is survived by his wife, Sue, and their sons, Tim and Peter.
“Don’s professionalism and exceptional dedication to his work has been an inspiration to others,” said Don’s wife, Sue Walker. “A scholarship in his name is a phenomenal way to promote the high standards of journalism he exemplified during his career.”
The MPC Endowment, a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation affiliated with the Milwaukee Press Club, is administering the endowment for the Don Walker Scholarship.
“Don was a frequent participant in Press Club programs, and we appreciated his enthusiasm and willingness to ask tough questions of our speakers,” said Jim Nelson, president of the Milwaukee Press Club Endowment, and past president of the Milwaukee Press Club. “We’re delighted that with the establishment of this scholarship the MPC Endowment can help extend his legacy for the next generation.”
* Contributions to the MPC Endowment are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
