Agenda: During the Annual Meeting, a brief state-of-the-club address and ratification of board member elections will take place prior to the investiture of Judge Christopher Foley as a Knight of Bohemia.
The Circle of the Knights of Bohemia is comprised of community leaders who are not journalists and recognizes exemplary community leadership. This year, we are recognizing the Honorable Christopher Foley for his long-standing and continuing contributions to our community.
Foley served as a trial judge for 38 years, from 1985 until his retirement in 2023, presiding over more than 200 jury trials. He was awarded the 2022 Lifetime Jurist award from the State Bar of Wisconsin, which recognizes jurists who during their tenure on the bench are fair and impartial, demonstrate high ideals and personal character, and demonstrate outstanding/long-term judicial service.
He is perhaps best known for his multiple stints in Children’s Court, where he especially enjoyed presiding over adoptions, giving a chance for a happy life to children who had been abused, abandoned or neglected. Foley was named a “Milwaukeean of the Year” in 1996 by Milwaukee Magazine and was given the Children’s Service Society Service to Children Award in 1997 for his work in implementing the Foster Care Conversion Project which freed hundreds of children for adoption who had been mired in long-term foster care. He is regarded as a national expert on juvenile law, especially in CHIPS proceedings and termination of parental rights cases.
A 1978 graduate of Marquette Law School, Foley was a law clerk for the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, a Milwaukee County Assistant District Attorney and a Milwaukee Municipal Court judge before he was appointed to succeed his father, the Honorable Leander J. Foley, Jr., as a circuit judge. He and his wife, Deb, are the proud parents of seven children and three grandchildren.
After his retirement earlier this year, Foley now serves as a mediator, arbitrator, and special master.
