Hilton Milwaukee City Center
509 W. Wisconsin Ave., Regency Ballroom (5th floor) Milwaukee WI, 53203

As part of its continuing effort to encourage in-depth analysis of important issues, the Milwaukee Press Club and WisPolitics.com are pleased to present this Behind the Headlines luncheon.

Although crime in Milwaukee decreased more than six percent overall from 2021 to 2022, a review of crime data from the past several years from some area media outlets and the Milwaukee Police Department shows a disturbing trend. Because crime spiked in 2021, the 2022 crime rate appeared to improve. But a look back to 2019 shows that overall crime in Milwaukee increased 22.6 percent over those three years, with violent crime up 15.6 percent and property crime up 26 percent. And despite the overall crime decrease from 2021 to 2022, year-over-year increases in some categories were significant: homicides more than doubled (121 percent) and non-fatal shootings nearly doubled (98 percent).

What: Community leaders will answer questions from a panel of journalists about the increase in violent crime in Milwaukee and what is being done to make residents safer.

When: Tuesday, June 13 – 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
