12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Deborah Kerr and Jill Underly, who are seeking to become superintendent of Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction, will be the featured guests at a virtual event set for noon on Thursday, April 1. This Newsmaker Lunch Hour is presented by a partnership between the Milwaukee Press Club, and WisPolitics.com.
Kerr and Underly, the top finishers among seven candidates in the February 16 primary, are running in the April 6 general election to replace incumbent Carolyn Stanford Taylor, who chose to step down from the non-partisan position. Gov. Tony Evers, who was the superintendent from 2009 to 2019, appointed Stanford Taylor after he was elected Governor in November 2018. Stanford Taylor announced last year that she would not seek election.
The campaign between Kerr, former superintendent of the Brown Deer School District, and Underly, Superintendent of the Pecatonica School District, has had a major focus on school funding. Kerr has said she supports school vouchers and charter schools; Underly has been critical of using public money for school vouchers.
Kerr and Underly and will field questions from a panel of journalists from noon to 1 p.m., moderated by Milwaukee Press Club President Corrinne Hess, reporter for Wisconsin Public Radio.
