The Circle of the Knights of Bohemia is comprised of individuals who are not journalists and recognizes exemplary community leadership. This year, we honor Huetta “Scotty” Manion for her contributions to our community and our club.

The operator of Landmarks Gallery, Manion has been a long-time, enthusiastic member of the Milwaukee Press Club. She served the Club in numerous ways, including as co-chair of a number of City of Milwaukee Birthday Parties. Also, Manion helped preserve and restore the club’s legacy. When the historic signature plaque collection needed cleanup, Landmarks Gallery handled that important project and others.

Manion’s love of journalism extends back to her college years. She earned a journalism degree in 1948 from Marquette University. While at Marquette, she was co-editor of the Hilltop Yearbook. She also was selected for induction into Alpha Sigma Nu, the honor society of Jesuit colleges and universities for students who distinguish themselves in scholarship, loyalty and service. Induction into Alpha Sigma Nu is one of the highest honors awarded on a Jesuit campus. She worked several years for the Marquette News Bureau until her marriage in 1951. She and her husband, Jean Patrick, lived in Alton, Illinois and New Haven, Connecticut before returning to Milwaukee. While raising their three children, Manion wrote a humor column for a local weekly newspaper, pursued freelance photography, and did volunteer work with the Association of Marquette University Women.

The Manions opened Landmarks Gallery in 1966 and brought many nationally and internationally renowned artists to Milwaukee for shows and events. Visits to the Newsroom Pub and plaque signings were often part of these events. As a result, signatures of artists such as Robert Batemen, Mario Fernandez, Owen Gromme and George Pollard, as well as singer and artist Tony Bennett, are part of the Press Club’s collection. One of the two oldest galleries in Milwaukee, Landmarks closed in July after 54 years in business.R
