MILWAUKEE – Martin J. Schreiber, former Wisconsin governor and author, will be the featured speaker at a Milwaukee Press Club Newsmaker Luncheon on Wednesday, April 5, 2017.

Schreiber will take questions from a panel of journalists and from the audience at the luncheon, set for 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Newsroom Pub, 137 E. Wells St. The event is open to the public.

Schreiber’s book, “My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver“, written with Cathy Breitenbucher, is more than an account of his struggles to provide care for his wife, Elaine. Schreiber offers advice for both caregivers and those who have Alzheimer’s, with a special focus on male caregivers because women make up nearly two-thirds of those with the neurological disorder.

Schreiber was a Democratic state senator from 1963 to 1971, when he took office as lieutenant governor under Governor Patrick Lucey. Upon Lucey’s resignation in July 1977, Schreiber served as governor until 1979, the end of his term. He lost his 1978 bid for another term and joined Sentry Insurance in Stevens Point.  He later formed a public affairs consulting firm and became a successful lobbyist.

Among Schreiber’s efforts on behalf of those affected by Alzheimer’s is his work with the Alzheimer’s Association on the 2015  launch of Operation Stronger Together, which connects caregivers and families throughout Southeast Wisconsin with assistance to help them learn, cope, and survive caregiving. He also was instrumental in the development of the online Dementia Friendly Employers toolkit, a statewide guide for human resources and employee assistance program professionals.
