The Rotary Club of Milwaukee invites the Milwaukee Press Club to attend the Rotary luncheon on Tuesday, December 2nd, featuring Richard J. Davidson of the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the Waisman Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison. The program will run from 12 noon to 1:15 p.m. in Memorial Hall at the War Memorial Center, 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive downtown. Parking is available to the north of the building – please tell the attendant you are there for Rotary. Registration and payment must be made in advance.

Davidson will deliver a program titled “Well-being is a skill.” This talk will consider scientific evidence that suggests that we can change our brains by transforming our minds and cultivate habits of mind that will improve well-being.  These include happiness, resilience, compassion and emotional balance.  Each of these characteristics is instantiated in brain circuits that exhibit plasticity and thus can be shaped and modified by experience and training.  Mental training to cultivate well-being has profound implications for the workplace including its impact on leadership, creativity, employee health, productivity and collaboration.

Richard J. Davidson is the William James and Vilas Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, Director of the Waisman Laboratory for Brain Imaging and Behavior and the Laboratory for Affective Neuroscience, and Founder and Chair of the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds, at the Waisman Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in Psychology and has been at Wisconsin since 1984. He is the author of the book (with Sharon Begley) The Emotional Life of Your Brain, published by Penguin in 2012.

The cost to attend is $18 for MPC members and $23 for non-members. Lunch is included. Registration deadline is Friday, November 28th. Advanced registration and payment are required and may be done by booking below. Checks may be mailed to the MPC at PO Box 176, North Prairie, WI  53153-0176. Cancellations will be accepted up to 48 hours in advance for a full refund.
