State Sen. Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee), who is challenging incumbent Mayor Tom Barrett in the April 7 General Election, will be the featured speaker at a Newsmaker Luncheon, hosted jointly by the Milwaukee Press Club, WisPolitics.com and the Rotary Club of Milwaukee on Wednesday, March 18 at the Newsroom Pub.
A Milwaukee native, Taylor, 53, has represented Senate District 4 since 2004; prior to that she served one year in the State Assembly after a special election in 2003. Taylor ran for Milwaukee County Executive in 2008 but lost to then-incumbent Scott Walker.
Taylor, a graduate of Rufus King High School in Milwaukee, received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1990 and a juris doctor degree from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 1993, according to her Wisconsin State Legislature biography. She worked as an attorney in the Wisconsin State Public Defender’s office before opening her own law firm, Taylor and Associates Law Office, in 1996.
She currently serves on these legislative committees: Insurance Financial Services, Government Oversight and Courts; Judiciary and Public Safety; Utilities and Housing; as well as the Juvenile Corrections Grant Committee.
Taylor will take questions from a panel of journalists and from the audience at the luncheon, set for 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Newsroom Pub, 137 E. Wells St.
