Milwaukee Press Club Offers to Double Your Donations

There’s never been a better time to support local journalism.

The Board of Governors of the Milwaukee Press Club has approved a $10,000 matching grant to support the MPC Endowment. That means your charitable contribution will be doubled – providing even more impact for local journalism.

The MPC Endowment is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 1973 to invest in the excellence of journalists through local scholarships, educational grants and programming.

In the past 12 months, the MPC Endowment has funded:

  • A student intern for the Milwaukee Press Club
  • The cost for 14 college students to attend the Milwaukee Media Hall of Fame dinner in 2017
  • The cost for 49 college students and six high school students and two of their advisors to attend the 2017 Wisconsin Excellence in Journalism/Gridiron Awards Dinner
  • The costs for the flight, room, transportation and any incidentals of the Sacred Cat award winner at the Gridiron Awards Dinner
  • All the awards at the Gridiron Awards Dinner
  • The attendance costs of four UW-Milwaukee journalism students at the Midwest Journalism Conference
  • The attendance costs of college journalism students at Newsmaker Luncheons
  • The attendance costs of five Wauwatosa West High School students at the JEA/NSPA Journalism Conference in Indianapolis
  • Grants for journalism programs at Messmer High School and Pius XI High School
  • Annual journalism scholarships at UW-Milwaukee, Marquette University and UW-Madison
  • The Don Walker Memorial Scholarship to a Marquette University journalism student
  • A grant to the James Foley Legacy Scholarship Foundation

As of October 2017, the MPC Endowment had assets of approximately $268,000. Funds come from donations made by individuals and from the proceeds of Milwaukee Press Club events. Funding decisions are made by an elected board of directors that operates independently of the club and maintains separate finances.

Many Milwaukee Press Club members, friends and community members have designated the MPC Endowment in their wills, or set up funds to honor journalists, such as the recent Eric Miller Scholarship Fund. Contact Endowment board treasurer David Niles to discuss these options. dniles@productiveknowledge.com

Also, many corporations are willing to match employee donations to a nonprofit. We encourage donors and their families to check with their corporate headquarters to inquire if the employer has a matching program.
