The Milwaukee Press Club has updated its collection of historic signatures on display in the Newsroom Pub.
New additions include Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, retired Major League Baseball pitching star Orel Hershiser, Marcus Corp. chairman Steven Marcus, local historian John Gurda, and ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons.
The signature collection dates back to 1898 when heavyweight boxing champion James J. Corbett, “Gentleman Jim,” signed the wall at the press club. The plaques on display are only a portion of the club’s collection which is held at the Urban Archives at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
More about the collection, including a complete list, can be found on the Press Club’s website at: https://milwaukeepressclub.org/about-us/signatures/.
The updating of the signature collection follows the reopening of the Safe House after a major renovation by the new owner Marcus Corporation.
David Niles, past president of the Milwaukee Press Club, updates the signature plaques in the past presidents section in the Newsroom Pub.
